What's going on?

The Plan

Hi! My name is Farhan and for my last birthday, instead of throwing myself a party with my friends and family, I decided to hold a charity event to raise funds for the SickKids Foundation. To achieve this goal, I participated in a 24-hour gaming marathon called Extra Life with some of my great friends. Together we raised nearly $6,200 USD for SickKids when our original goal was set at $1,000! That's crazy!

I'd like to do Extra Life again this year because not only did we have a ton of fun, but I know we can continue to help out sick children who are in need.

My Story

On my 36th birthday in 2015, I was hospitalized when nearly the entire right side of my body gradually went numb. It was like that side of my body just went to sleep, with a pins and needles sensation. After lots of testing and a few treatments of strong steroids, most of the feeling came back. The diagnosis was a neurological disorder known as transverse myelitis, but the neurologists warned if my symptoms occur again, the new diagnosis would most likely be MS, multiple sclerosis.

A year and a half later, my worst fear was confirmed. This time it was the left side of my body having too much sensation. After another trip to the MRI scanner, the MS specialists had the proof they needed to come to the conclusion that I suffer from relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and presented me with treatment options. I must now inject myself with an absurdly expensive drug, daily. This aspect of my life is very new and I can only hope that this treatment is compatible with my body. My right arm and hand (my dominant side) are still weak and have the pins and needles feeling to this day.

Even though I have this debilitating disease that can potentially get worse, I still consider myself lucky. There are thousands of sick children who need life-saving care from specialized doctors, expensive medical equipment, and a massive amount of clinical research. Please help me help these kids and donate today at my page on Extra-Life.org.

The System

Extra Life brings board gamers and video gamers together for 24-hour gaming marathons worldwide to support Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. They have raised more than $30 million to help children's hospitals provide critical treatments and health care services, pediatric medical equipment, research and charitable care.

Children's Miracle Network Hospitals is a non-profit organization that raises funds and awareness for 170 member hospitals that provide 32 million treatments each year to kids across Canada and the U.S.. The local CMN hospital I have chosen is SickKids - The Hospital For Sick Children.

SickKids Foundation raises funds on behalf of The Hospital for Sick Children. Their fundraising is driven by the belief that improving the health and well-being of children is one of the most powerful ways to improve society.

Your donation is tax-deductible (if over $20 USD) and ALL PROCEEDS go to help kids.

My Systems

If you know me, you probably know that video games are a huge part of my life and they have been since I was a child. From Sega to Nintendo, Sony to Microsoft, and the others in-between... there are hundreds of unique experiences, stories, music and visuals to be enjoyed.

Since 1987 (three decades!), I have been collecting home console systems, computer and portable games and have amassed around 2,000 games either digitally or physically. Ports of arcade classics, platformers, RPGs, puzzle games, rhythm games, strategy, adventure... almost any genre out there, I probably have it! So what better way is there to put them to use other than supporting a charity like SickKids?

A few years ago I started a side project to try and preserve older "retro" games as best I could as the aging technology is becoming harder to come by. I wanted to make a library of sorts so people can experience the history of video games as I did growing up, instead of these games deteriorating in storage somewhere, sadly forgotten. Let's use these games for the reason they have been made — to be played!

During this marathon, my team and I will be playing games from many of the consoles I own, from which I can stream to YouTube Gaming and/or Twitch — social media sites dedicated to broadcasting gamers doing what they love.

Latest Updates

This Weekend: Day 2!

Day 2 Schedule is Up!

I have posted the approximate timings for the games we're playing this Saturday, November 18th for Day 2 of our charity marathon. You can find it at the top of the Event Schedule page.

This time, I'm going to have 7 devices hooked up for the other 16 games we will be playing for our remaining 12 hours. We'll be using my model 1 Genesis, NES and SNES Classic Minis, PC, PS4, Wii U and Xbox 360. We have puzzle games, action platformers, sports, brawlers... but the one thing they all have in common is fun!

Come check out all the fun we'll be having again as we stream live on my Twitch channel under my username, AlfaTrion. We may even go into overtime again like on Day 1!

Donation Incentives #ForTheKids

During Day 1 of the marathon, I said for every donation of $35 or over, I would do a tequila + Tabasco shot. By the end of the night we raised over $500! So for Day 2 we will do more of the same, responsibly.

You can check out some of our incentives, donation tiers and stretch goals on the Event Schedule page. We'll be doing things like push ups, planks, shots and maybe some face painting! Please donate and make us look like fools... it's for the kids!

Thanks again to all who donated so far. Now is the time to tell your friends they can join in the fun too :)

A Successful Day! Part 1 is Done.

What a Great 15 Hours...

First off, I would like to thank everyone that stopped by either in person or via live stream, all the people who donated yesterday and especially everyone who played with me throughout the day. Also thanks to Carmen, Judy and Shela for keeping everyone fed.

Day 1 was a huge success as we raised over $500 more over the course of the day. We played for 12 hours followed by 3 bonus hours. I made an incentive during the stream where if people donated $35 or more, I would do a tequila + Tabasco shot. It seemed to work! Don't worry, I didn't allow myself to do them too fast, for safety sake. Donations were still coming in then next day which brought us to $3,640!

Let's keep this going for Day 2 which is on the 18th of November. I'll try to post the game schedule later this week. Let's see if we can get to $4,000! Time to restock the tequila... #ForTheKids!

There is a temporary video of the entire 15 hour stream on my Twitch channel. I will be chopping it up and posting it to my YouTube account during the next few months, so stay tuned.

Out of the games we played, the top 3 biggest hits were:

  • Rock Band
  • Windjammers
  • Nidhogg

Big thanks to Justin, Dennis and Heshaka for requesting these gems!

Day 2 - November 18th

For Day 2 I will be thinking up some more incentives for people to keep donating and raising funds for SickKids Foundation.

If you think of any, let me know!

Next Weekend: GAME TIME!

Just a Little More...

As of this post we are a mere 5% away from our $3,000 goal, only $145 short! Also, we still have a half-hour game slot left for requests which can make a great incentive for your friends to donate for the cause (KIDS)! Let them know and if you haven't requested a game already, what are you waiting for? There are some suggestions at the bottom of the Available Games List for your convenience :).

Currently, the Extra Life site shows that 1UPers are in the Top 5 list of fundraisers for SickKids Foundation. If we go passed our goal, we may even make Top 3!
